More than $100,000 to benefit Plantagenet community groups

Twenty-one community groups and organisations will share in more than $108,000 under the Shire’s 2023/2024 Community Grants Program.

The Council approved 21 applications for financial assistance at its 25 July meeting, with funds to be awarded this financial year. Applications were evaluated against criteria including community benefit.

Shire President Chris Pavlovich congratulated the successful applicants.

“Our community grants reflect Council’s commitment to support local groups and organisations who contribute to improving the livability of our community,” Cr Pavlovich said.

“Across five categories, these grants will deliver financial assistance totaling $108,154 to local and regional arts and sporting events and projects, operating costs for incorporated organisations and clubs, and organisations that provide a community service.”

The successful applicants were:

Regional events:

  • Mount Barker Wildlife and Nature Photo Competition Committee $2600 in-kind towards Frost Park hire costs,
  • Porongurup Promotions Association Inc $2500 cash and $1500 in-kind traffic management for the Porongurup Festival,
  • The Wine Show of WA $2210 cash and $840 in-kind towards changeroom hire,
  • Mount Barker Campdraft Club Inc. $1000 towards the annual camp draft.

Local events:

  • Rotary Club of Mount Barker $1500 towards Australia Day breakfast and senior’s luncheon,
  • Mitchell House Arts Centre $1200 towards the Plantagenet Art Prize.

Community group project:

  • Kendenup Tennis Club $5000 towards the installation of court lighting,
  • Rocky Gully Country Women’s Association $3500 towards renovation costs,
  • Plantagenet Players $500 towards the purchase of table linen.

Community group operating costs and other support:

  • Anglican Op Shop $416 towards waste disposal,
  • Mount Barker Toy Library $500 towards operating costs,
  • Mount Barker Turf Club $2000 towards racetrack maintenance,
  • Woogenellup Progress Association $600 towards equipment upgrade,
  • Plantagenet News $2000 towards printer purchase,
  • Youthcare Mount Barker $6000 towards the provision of a chaplain service,
  • Mount Barker Golf Club $1000 to upgrade umpiring equipment.

Endorsed community service organisations:

  • Mount Barker Tourism $32,000 towards Visitor Centre operations,
  • Plantagenet Historical Society $22,000 towards operations,
  • Plantagenet Sporting Club $10,000 towards operations and $2100 towards a closed-circuit television surveillance system,
  • Empowering Plantagenet Seniors $3000 towards building maintenance.

Endorsed community service organisations are not-for-profit organisations that lease Shire buildings and provide a community service, which are eligible for an annual subsidy. These applications are considering by the Council in conjunction with its annual community grants process.

Applications for the next round of community grants will open in March 2024. Applications for donations of a maximum of $500 may be submitted in writing at any time of the year.
