Mount Barker will over time be the home of a new destination playground and shared community space, with a proposed $6.5m redevelopment of Wilson Park.
Council adopted the Wilson Park Recreational Masterplan at its 27 February meeting and will now consider a staged approach and funding options.
Convic developed the masterplan in consultation with stakeholders and the community, including Kendenup Playgroup, Mount Barker Lions Club and Mount Barker Mountain Bike Group, as well as the broader Plantagenet Community.
The Lions Club recently donated $30,000 for the installation of outdoor exercise equipment, which was added to the park in February.
Other elements of the redevelopment include a flying fox, pump track, full basketball court and separate toddler and kids’ playgrounds.
Green spaces will also be expanded, allowing use for markets and food trucks, and amenities and footpaths will be updated.
It is proposed that the works be carried out in stages with stage one incorporating the skatepark, pump track, associated furniture and landscaping, while stage two will include all other recreation programs, play zones and associated landscaping.
Shire President Cr Len Handasyde said it was about creating a space for the whole community to enjoy, and one that would continue to do this for years to come.
“Wilson Park is the main recreation area for Mount Barker and some of the park infrastructure needs updating and refurbishment in order to meet future needs,” he said.
“Other elements of the proposal will be new or additional developments to add to the experience of recreation in the townsite.
“Staff have recommended that further consideration be given to project planning before further funding is sought.”
Shire staff met with representatives from Regional Development Australia in early March to discuss funding opportunities.
All new developments are considered in line with the Shire’s Corporate Business Plan, ensuring there are sufficient resources to fund, maintain and replace equipment and infrastructure in the future.
