The Shire of Plantagenet Community Citizen of the Year Awards recognise individuals and organisations making a notable contribution or providing outstanding service to the community.
Shire President Len Handasyde said Plantagenet was fortunate to have so many dedicated and passionate volunteers who selflessly contribute their time and energy to improving their community.
“There are many people who work tirelessly for the community and most without ever having any recognition at all,” Cr Handasyde said.
“They do the lion’s share of the work in any community and without them we would be much poorer."
"How could one not be appreciative of the community we have with all those who willingly assist wherever they can?”
The Community Citizen of the Year was awarded to Deb Smith for her work in youth care, St John’s Ambulance and the Mount Barker Toy Library.
The Senior Citizen of the Year was awarded to Maggie Shanklin for her decades of work for the Friends of the Porongurup Range.
The Active Citizenship Award (for groups or events) was awarded to Karlup Animal Sanctuary for their efforts in wildlife conservation and habitat restoration.
Cr Handasyde congratulated all the award winners and the nominees, before the Australian citizenship ceremony.
The Shire offers a warm welcome to our newest Australian citizens: Khatima Alizada from Afghanistan, Ney Rosedo from the Phillippines, and Fabian Stein from Germany.
These awards are proudly sponsored by Principal Partner the Department of Communities; and media partners 9News Perth, 6PR Perth and WA Today. They are delivered in partnership with Auspire and Joint Patrons His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson AC APM Governor of Western Australia, and Mrs Darrilyn Dawson.
