Improving access and inclusion

The inaugural Disability Reference Group meeting was held on Tuesday 10 December.

Council adopted a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2024-2029 (DAIP) in October.

The DAIP includes strategies and actions to improve inclusiveness and access to Shire facilities and services for people with a disability.

One of the strategies was the formation of a Disability Reference Group for people with lived experience of disability or a close carer or family member.

The aim of the group is to provide advice and share experiences regarding access and inclusion in the Shire.

The Shire partnered with APM Communities to invite people to participate in the inaugural Disability Reference Group, with the first meeting and morning tea held this week at the Mount Barker Memorial Swimming Pool.

The group toured the pool changeroom, kiosk building, First Aid facilities, disabled access ramp and disabled parking area, and provided feedback.

Suggestions included an automatic door, taps and soap dispenser in the disabled toilets, an adjustable bed and chair with support arms in the First Aid room, and lockers for storing medicines or medical equipment.

The group will visit the Mount Barker Recreation Centre next.
