The Shire entered into a Renewable Energy Supply Agreement on 1 April, as a participant of second phase of the WALGA Sustainable Energy Supply Project (SESP).
The project harnesses the local government sector’s collective purchasing power to deliver savings, sustainability benefits and administrative efficiency.
The ACCC-approved buying group contract electricity under a volume aggregated purchasing process, coordinated by WALGA.
The Shire joined the group in 2022, alongside 47 other local governments, during the project’s first phase.
Shire President Len Handasyde said phase one enabled the Shire to reduce energy costs and access renewable energy across the Administration Building, Sounness Park, Mount Barker Regional Saleyards and Mount Barker Community Resource Centre.
“WALGA estimates the first three-year contact collectively saved participating local governments $34 million and offset approximately 120,000 tonnes of carbon,” Cr Handasyde said.
“With the phase one contract expiring on 31 March 2025, WALGA is renewing contracts for phase two, which commenced on 1 April and expires on 31 March 2028.”
“Modelling by WALGA of the comparative costs and savings specific to the Shire of Plantagenet shows the cost across the three-year contract is $301,880, with total savings compared to the open market of $236,465.”
The Shire’s continued participation in the project aligns with the Corporate Business Plan 2022/23-2025/26 outcomes for conservation and environment, and performance and leadership.
