Shire presidents – past and present – attended the annual WALGA Local Government Awards on 2 August.

These awards, as part of the Local Government Honours Program, acknowledge the remarkable achievements and lasting contributions of Elected Members and Officers within their respective Councils, the Local Government sector, WALGA, and the wider community.

Past Shire of Plantagenet President Mr Chris Pavlovich was awarded the Eminent Service Award for his work as a Shire Councillor, six years as Shire President, four years as WALGA Zone President and three years as State Councillor, as well as his time serving on several WALGA committees.

All inaugural RoadWise Councils were also congratulated and recognised for their commitment to working towards best practice road safety.

“The WALGA Awards night was a good event, with awards presented to those who have contributed to the Local Government Sector over and above the line of duty,” Shire President Cr Len Handasyde said.

“While most don’t work for this reason, the awards do recognise significant effort and time given to the sector for outcomes that would not otherwise be available.”

Opened with a Welcome to Country by Cr Barry Winmar and speeches from WALGA President Karen Chappel AM JP and the Honourable Hannah Beazley, Minister for Local Government, 2024 marked the first time that these Awards received the spotlight as a stand-alone event.
